"Double
Crossing"
Coming Fall 2005
|
A
sixteen year old girl whose mother is American and father is Chinese
lives in two worlds, a white middle-class neighborhood on Staten Island
and Chinatown in Manhattan. May Lee frequently crosses between these
two islands, but struggles to define herself in each world. Money
is stolen both at her church on Staten Island and at the Benevolent
Society in Chinatown. May Lee's keen observations and teamwork with
her father contribute greatly to solving the Benevolent Society's
theft. May Lee's big heart and tentative relationship with Michael
help solve the church theft. The two cultures handle the crime and
criminals in entirely different ways. Only May Lee can bridge the
gap and connect the two.
Another crossing occurs between two continents this time, Asia and
America. May Lee learns of other crimes and the role of civil rights.
Her identity and sense of self become stronger as she meets new friends.
Strangely enough, some of the money reappears in both cases, but only
May Lee has the knowledge, friendships and skills to direct the money
back toward it original purpose.
